Infused with energy and movement, the powerful and mesmerizing expanses resemble clouds and smoke (outsized versions of previous examples). Here, the images are nearly overwhelmed by voluminous masses of deep blue, by turns moody and sensual gradations of ominous grays and cool, bright whites. The artist has also incorporated the magazine portraits into a selection of her large-scale paintings, a new direction she began pursuing in 2015. Simpson has paired the Ebony and Jet portraits with natural phenomena such as geological formations and glacial masses billows of clouds and plumes of smoke architectural elements domestic interiors scientific and anatomical diagrams and a variety of sculptures. She has since experimented, combining the images with all manner of found photography and illustrations from textbooks. Black men and children have featured in her collages, but overwhelmingly she’s focused on advertising images of Black women culled and cut from the pages of the iconic publications.Įarly on, beginning in 2011, Simpson embellished these photographic portraits from the 1960s and 70s with elaborate ink wash swirls and swooshes, grand and colorful gestures that resulted in fanciful and fantastical coiffures. THE IMAGES OF AFRICAN AMERICANS that populate the pages of vintage Ebony and Jet magazines have been a source of inspiration for Lorna Simpson for nearly a decade.

The Russians have foot cloths and felt boots, the Germans have socks (which get holes) and tight leather boots. But Russian feet don’t freeze at lower temperatures than German feet. The first one is quickly disposed of – Hitler did listen to his generals most of the time and it can be argued that when he didn’t he was right about half the time.Ĭold. They created a story in which they would have beaten the Soviets 1) if only Hitler had let them get on with the job 2) it hadn’t been so cold 3) if the Soviets hadn’t overwhelmed them with endless hordes of men. They wanted to show that, should there be a war against the Soviets, they would have useful things to tell their new owners, but they’d lost and who wants advice from losers? They solved the dilemma with what Jonathon House (see below) has called “the three alibis”. This presented the generals with a big dilemma. David GlantzĪfter the war, we had a lot of German generals in our hands and we got them to tell what happened on the Eastern Front – the war against the USSR – about which we knew very little. Worse still, this obscurity and misunderstanding has perverted the history of World War II overall by masking the Red Army’s and Soviet State’s contributions to ultimate Allied victory. … much of the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War remains obscure and imperfectly understood by Westerners and Russians alike. On the opposite page, a single painting is centered mid-page: the Rembrandt painting Bathsheba, depicting a nude woman with a servant crouching at her foot. On the following page, five images are collaged, comparing various representations of female nudes from across art history: a Giacometti sculpture, an erotic-looking photograph, and an Impressionist painting are all all juxtaposed against one another. Below that, a photo from a magazine is reprinted, depicting a woman in an evening gown on the red carpet as three men stare at her approvingly. Both have glamorous hairdos, and a male figure is visible in the background, where he appears to be building something. On the opposite page is a photo of two figures it's unclear whether they're women or mannequins. Next comes a woman seated in the backseat of a luxurious car, eyes closed, clutching an expensive-looking purse as spectators stare into the car window looking confused and excited. She focuses on her work, looking away from the camera, while three large photos of women-apparently advertisements or magazine editorials-rest on the wall behind her. The first is a photograph of a woman at work in what appears to be a photo studio. Women are central to each image in this chapter. The second chapter of Ways of Seeing is made up entirely of images. Then there are other times where both Colin and Summer cause a digression in their relationship. There are times where they help each other out and progress their relationship further. One of my favorite aspects of the book was the constant push and pull and the slow burn between the two characters. As someone whose favorite genre of books is realistic fiction and as someone who also loves romantic books, I enjoyed The Chase. The Chase by Elle Kennedy is about a wealthy college student, Summer Heyward-Di Laurentis, and her life living with her crush, Colin Fitzgerald. This month we have a two-for-one deal with a book review and read-alikes list both by Elaina S., age 15. By now I hope you’ve read our previous By Teens, For Teens blog posts and are starting to look forward to them! This series is all teen-created content and makes it that much more awesome (IMHO). Tarkin was written by James Luceno, an author with a huge number of Star Wars tie-in novels from the Legends canon already under his belt, such as the intriguing-sounding Darth Plagueis. Tarkin was released in late 2014 and was one of the first non-movie novelisations or young reader Star Wars novels that were released in this new canon. I have read a lot of Star Wars books in 2019 and not only have I tried to stay abreast of the latest releases (for example, the latest Star Wars novel, Resistance Reborn) but I have also been checking out some of the older novels in the franchise (such as Thrawnand Death Troopers). This new expanded universe, which supplanted the existing expanded universe (which is now known as Star Wars Legends), has featured some amazing books which I have been really getting into in the last couple of years. Since early 2014, Disney has done an excellent job installing a new and distinctive expanded universe for the Star Wars franchise. In this week’s Throwback Thursday I check out an amazing and compelling Star Wars tie-in novel that focuses on a fascinating character from the franchise, with Star Wars: Tarkin, written by veteran tie-in author James Luceno. Reviewed as part of my Throwback Thursday series, where I republish old reviews, review books I have read before or review older books I have only just had a chance to read. Publisher: Penguin Random House Audio (Audiobook – 4 November 2019) And she does, in dense, almost sociological detail (the list of the members of the key families is actually necessary). Elena leaves the neighborhood and eventually Naples and Southern Italy Lila does not. Elena completes her schooling Lila does not. But this is more than a conventional up-from-poverty tale. Except Lila: smarter and bolder than the others, she does what she wants, drawing Elena, who narrates the story, in her wake. There are rules and expectations, and everyone knows and lives by them. The world of Elena and Lila, Neapolitan girls growing up after the Second World War, is small, casually violent, and confined to their poor neighborhood where everyone knows everyone and the few prosperous families dominate. The other cats followed, theShadowClan patrol matching ThunderClan step for step. With a faint nod, Nightstar set off beside Bluestar. They shifted so that they surrounded theThunderClan cats on all sides. We wouldn’t want ThunderClan to be scared off by an angry mouse, would we?” A murmur of agreement rose from the ShadowClan warriors. “Just to make sure you get toFourtrees safely. Who knowswhat they’re up to?” “We’ll even give you an escort,” Nightstar went on, narrowing his eyes. We’ve seen nothing of ShadowClan since the floods started.
